Fellow Activists

MzAxNS0tLTQxODY1OC0tLTMw.jpg

We salute the unsung heros, fellow activists from around the world with stories worthy of our attention. They may be young or old but they have the guts to stand up for change. These stories express honest and willful courage to better the world. It my be the tough personal will it takes to change themselves or the fight to change communities. The young man who started his own bike trek to clean up his body and his mind inspired by the film  "Go Further" or the Native Americans rallying to save their ancestral lands from developers or the mom's with very sick children who want to educate others about harmful environmental hazards are all activists with a vision for change. These Solmates are on the front lines of the efforts to help support, save and preserve social justice & environmental causes. During these times when we are too often divided by differences in beliefs, political positions or tactics. We must encourage each other to put aside those differences for the sake of a greater justice and to get passionate about each other's causes, because we are much more effective working together, than we are divided. So we want to embrace those acting in the spirit of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi and are honored to be highlighting the important work of our fellow activists.

Are you Oglala or Wasicu?”
largest nuclear facility in US, TN
No doubt names can be deceiving. The issue of the so call Native American Energy Group (NAEG) is who does this promise serve? The idea of waving the possibility of multimillion dollars in front of tribal presidents responsible for the economic development of a reservation that is slated for poverty by design is unconscionable.

You Voted. Now What? Juan Reynosa's Environmental Mission
Community organizer Juan Reynosa.
If you talk to the 27-year-old community organizer Juan Reynosa, it becomes obvious why the rhetoric of President-elect Obama mobilized a record number of young voters. Similar to a vast majority of his peers, Reynosa is tired of hearing what he calls the "endless gloom and doom scenarios." When he organizes young people in Albuquerque or goes back to his native rural town of Hobbs, New Mexico, he wants to talk about solutions and hope. He doesn't dwell on polar bears drowning — he wants to talk about how young people around the country are retrofitting old, polluting buildings, putting on bio-diesel powered concerts, and pushing their cities to support Green Jobs.

Call of the Wild: Dr. Richard Taber receives the Aldo Leopold...
Dr. Richard Taber is a winner!
More than a half century ago, Aldo Leopold helped this country develop an environmental conscience. Leopold, who write "A Sand County Almanac," was a leader in the movement for wilderness preservation. Not long after Leopold died in 1948, The Wildlife Society created the Aldo Leopold Memorial Award. The highest honor bestowed by the society, it's a lifetime achievement award given to those whose careers have made a difference to the cause of wildlife conservation. This year's winner, Dr. Richard Taber, actually worked with Leopold. Taber received the award Saturday in Miami at the annual conference of The Wildlife Society.
