Internship Opportunities

VoiceYourself seeks interns to work with key team members in research, content development, design production and technical support. Interns work off site assisting with the preparation, production and material development for the web site. If you think you may be interested in an internship at VoiceYourself, there are a few things you need to know about how we work before contacting us.

Requirements

• Computer access
• Must be self-motivated, energetic, have good communication skills and a healthy sense of humor helps
  
• Team player, able to take direction
  
• Ability to meet project deadlines and multi-task.
  
• Flexible schedule
  
• Basic computer skills (Word, Excel).
• Design skills (Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator) are a plus.
  
  

Content & Graphic Development

VoiceYourself posts both original commentary and reprints from independent magazines, newspapers, journals, and zines. VoiceYourself’s primary purpose is to offer insights, tools and resources for environmental stewardship as well as critical views of the current trends of social and political injustices to advocate change.

We believe the opportunity to work with VoiceYourself offers interns a valuable learning experience by interacting with a variety of environmental, academic, legal, activist, media/design and IT professionals. It is important that the internship be a mutually beneficial relationship. This is an opportunity to be part of our mission and learn practical skills. Because the internship is very much what the intern makes of it, we look for interns who have a genuine interest or knowledge in specific areas we focus on. We encourage interns to participate in creative brainstorming and bring their own experiences and perspective to the discussion that will assist us in communicating our goals. Working under the supervision of key team members interns may be asked to:

• Research, fact check, verify source material
  
• Review forum posts and website content for analysis of trends
  
• Initiate contacts and conduct phone interviews
  
• Prepare reports in preparation for original creative development
• Access to a computer and web research skills are required.
  
  

If you have graphic design, illustration and/or photography skills we encourage you to contact us also. Interns can learn about and contribute to the creative design and production of the site.

Programmer Interns

Working directly with Hai Ng our technical guru this internship will involve the development of VoiceYourself's Web Publishing Infrastructure.

Have the opportunity to develop a customized content-management system for the VoiceYourself Web site from the ground up and be exposed to database development, server management, content-management and user interaction issues related to developing, documenting and deploying a complete content-management system which will be responsible for serving content on the site.

• Experience with XHTML 1.0 and CSS 1.0 is a minimum requirement
  
  
• Working experience with PERL 5, PHP 4 and working on a Linux-environment is a plus.

This can be an opportunity for those of you who have always wanted to learn PERL and PHP running on a production level server.

Interns should have an interest in the technical aspects of Web development and dynamic content engines.

• Candidates should be self-motivated, inquisitive, and be willing to think outside the box.
  
• Candidates should also have their own ability to connect and work remotely over the Internet and be able and willing to install software on their computer to allow them to securely connect to our firewall. We will also be glad to provide assessment reports to your academic institutions where appropriate and applicable.
  

All code and content developed will remain the property of VoiceYourself but credit will be posted for anybody involved in providing significant work on the site.

Work site/Conditions

All team members, editorial, management and site moderators, work off site in various locations. You will be assigned a contact person to work with.

We have worked with and will consider educational requirements that can benefit a student for recognition of time and fulfillment of obligations for credit.

Time/date

• Internships are unpaid.
  
• Start dates are rolling.
  
• Internships are for 15-20 hours per week.
  
• Lengths are flexible but a minimum of three months is required.
  
• We prefer those who can offer 6 months. All schedules are flexible
  
• Hours, duties and requirements vary.
