After
working as a lawyer in Hartford, Connecticut young Nader moved to Washington
to begin his career as a consumer advocate. He was advisor to Senate subcommittee
studying auto safety and took on the auto industry with the publication of his
groundbreaking Unsafe At Any Speed in 1965. Much due to his influence, Congress
passed the 1966 National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. He was also influential
in the passage of 1967’s Wholesome Meat Act which
called for federal inspections of beef and poultry that imposed standards on
slaughterhouses , as well as the Clean Air and Freedom of Information Acts.
The man has done so much good.
